I love when people smile. It brightens my day. I search for them as I’m out and about. A friend once told me she was walking across the magnificent mile in Chicago and was contemplating suicide. She watched pedestrians walk towards her and pass her by without the slightest acknowledgement of her existence. Wondering if her life mattered, full of feelings of hopelessness and despair she said to herself, if just one person smiles at me before I finish this walk I’ll take it as a sign not to take my life. My friend was in a tough place in her life.
She lived to tell me that experience so someone must have smiled. That story has always resonated with me. Do you know the power in a smile?
